Pranayama Practice

A structured breath awareness practice for regulation, attention, and clarity

Overview

Pranayama within YOGA5D is a structured practice of breath regulation designed to support awareness of breathing patterns, rhythm, and capacity.

Rather than being presented as an energy-manipulation or transformational technique, pranayama is approached as a method of consciously engaging with breath to influence pacing, steadiness, and mental focus.

The practice emphasises precision, comfort, and observation rather than intensity or outcome.

Understanding Pranayama in YOGA5D

Traditional yogic texts describe pranayama using specific terminology that refers to phases of the breath cycle.

Within YOGA5D, these terms are used descriptively and educationally:

• Puraka – controlled inhalation

• Rechaka – controlled exhalation

• Antar Kumbhaka – gentle pause after inhalation

• Bahya Kumbhaka – gentle pause after exhalation

These phases are explored as patterns of breathing, not as mechanisms for altering energy systems or internal structures.

What Happens in a Session

Each Pranayama Practice session unfolds gradually and typically includes:

• Instruction in selected breathing patterns

• Attention to posture and comfort

• Guidance on rhythm and pacing

• Periods of observation and rest

Breathing is never forced. Adjustments are made to suit individual capacity and comfort.

Benefits of the Pranayama Practice

Benefits vary between individuals and are not guaranteed. Commonly reported experiences include:

Integration with Other Practices

Pranayama may be practised:
